John Hampden War Memorial Scholarship Fund

What is the JHWMSF for

This fund was formed around 1947 and became a charity in 1962. It is administered by a small group of Trustees who are mainly Old Tamensians.

The fund makes grants to former Lord Williams’s School students in higher education, apprenticeships, and undertaking vocational training.

The fund also provides textbooks and equipment for the School.

The fund provides grants, not loans; you will NOT be asked to repay the money awarded at some later date.

It is possible to apply for awards for up to 3 years of post-school studies. Usually, all applicants receive an award unless the items requested are outside those which the fund is able to pay for (see guidance below).

A grant will usually be given towards the costs of:

  • Books,
  • tools and equipment and other course necessities such as special clothing, hairdresser’s scissors, sound kit, human skeleton etc.,
  • travel essential to your course such as geography field trip,
  • some items of IT equipment if essential to your course of study.

What is NOT covered

  • Course/training fees,
  • accommodation costs,
  • travel to place of education/apprenticeship from home,
  • regular transport to and from the place of study,
  • laptops, phones or other IT hardware (unless you can provide evidence that it is essential to your course of study,
  • Gap year costs and expenses unless directly relevant to your intended further education study.
