Treasurer (year 2 of 4) 1972-80

Treasurer (year 2 of 4): Years: 1972-80. I was deputy head boy.

Bio: I retired as a partner in Deloitte (a “big 4” audit and accountancy practice) in 2018 having worked in the City of London for almost 35 years. I worked in a variety of roles in risk management and internal and external audit and then finally on a number of global strategy projects. In my retirement I have focused on voluntary work, principally in the education and adult social care sectors.  I am also a mentor for 6th form students (including at the school), university students, recent graduates and a number of people who are either starting or seeking to develop their own businesses.

Your memories at LWS: First of all, it was a bit of a shock coming from a small primary school in Long Crendon, firstly going to what was Lower School East and then to Upper School. I enjoyed my time both academically and playing sports, particularly rugby and cricket.  Most of my memories relate to sporting successes or failures, particularly as captain of the 1st XI at cricket.

How has your time at LWS influenced you since leaving? I think that the academic rigour and high standards that were expected have stood me in good stead – hopefully I have retained these and some of them has rubbed off on the teams I have worked with. Being involved in team sports throughout my time at LWS has also helped me in understanding the values of friendship, teamwork and mutual support.

What advice would you give LWS students now? Follow your dreams and be true to yourself; never do anything that conflicts with your own values. Try to find a career in which you are valued as an individual, trust the people you work with and can speak your mind openly and honestly. Money is a means to an end, not an end in itself, so work to live not live to work.
